When Marcelo is not with his family, teaching, doing research or writing, he is out in the woods and rivers of northern New England, either trail-running or fly fishing. He is an avid obstacle racer, in particular of Spartan Races. To keep him humble, he tracks trout in rocky streams whenever he can. Catch and release only.
Marcelo sees a lot in common in pushing the limits of body and mind: Both take courage, endurance, and persistence. In his view, obstacles are triggers, not barriers. He takes inspiration from Dylan Thomas: Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Whenever he can, Marcelo goes back to his native Rio to be with old friends and family. No matter what, he takes a dive at Ipanema beach.
