The Undeniable Joy of Discovery: The Story of Marcelo Gleiser, 2019 Templeton Prize Laureate

Marcelo Gleiser, a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and one of the leading advocates for the view that science, philosophy, and spirituality are complementary expressions of humanity’s enduring quest to embrace mystery and the unknown, was named the recipient of the 2019 Templeton Prize.

Gleiser, then 60, is the Appleton Professor of Natural Philosophy and Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. He has earned international recognition through his books, essays, blogs, television documentaries, and public lectures, presenting science as a profoundly human—and deeply spiritual—journey to understand the origins of the universe and the emergence of life on Earth.

A native of Brazil, where his books have become bestsellers and his television appearances have attracted audiences in the millions, Gleiser became the first Latin American to receive the Templeton Prize.

The John Templeton Foundation supports interdisciplinary research and catalyzes conversations that inspire awe and wonder. We are working to create a world where people are curious about the wonders of the universe, free to pursue lives of meaning and purpose, and motivated by great and selfless love.
